Oblivion Tips and Glitches
Unlimited Gold from Count of Skingrad
When you complete the Cure fo Vampirism quest, go to the Count of Skingrad for your reward. After the Countess is laid to rest, you are asked to go to to County Hall to wait for the count to meet you there and reward you. After he arrives, he will walk over to you and start talking. When he's finished, ask him about your reward.
He will give you 2500 gold. Keep on asking him for the reward, and he will keep on shelling out 2500.
I got up to a little over 10 million gold using this cheat, only stopping to go to work. I have no idea how high you can go, but 10 million must have taken me a good hour.
(IMPORTANT!: This cheat only works just after the Count meets you in the county hall after talking to the Argonian that serves him. If the Count goes up to his room, you cant scam any more gold from him, so dont close the conversation box until you have all of the gold that you want!)

Defend Melee Attacks Easily
Feeling kinda frightened by the big, evil, meele warrior coming towards you? Well, just find some rocks (if you can get outside) or some other object and jump onto it. You can then stand on the top of it, hurling fireballs and shooting arrows at the poor foe, who'll be unable to defend himself.

Items Slowing You Down?
If you play this game alot and use many weapons, you're limited on carrying items up to your capacity. Or, you don't want your weapons to slow you down, even if your're about 1/3rd's away from maxing out.
This is a great method of carrying a lot of weapons, armors, potions, and/or misc items that you dont want in your own inventory.
When you are given the magical horse, "Shadowmere" from the Dark Brotherhood, this is the only horse you will always use, since it's undestructable. Here's the trick;
Try to beat down the horse until it is unconcious. Immediately, before it gets back up, go to the corspe and search the body like you would with normal enemies, etc. Usually, an unconcious character will only provide you with the option, "Talk", while the character is still on the ground.
You can search the horse, push the left trigger button and drop in whatever you need carrying. This is far more than carrying everything you possibly can on your personal inventory while in battle.
This works with the Xbox 360 and using the horse armor; I'm not sure if the armor has anything to do with it since I figured it out after I bought the armor package.

The Right Weapon Array
Given the complex combat and wide array of enemies in Oblivion, it is vital that you keep an array of weapons available for your early encounters. Enchanted weapons show up fairly often after level 5 or so, so be sure to keep a fire-based enchanted weapon along with a shock-based, magicka affecting, and simple unenchanted weapon on your person (an Ease Burden spell from Deetsan in the Cheydinhall Mages Guild can help with the weight).
If you find yourself not making much of a dent with a fire-casting weapon, switch around until you find the weakness of your current enemy. These few more points of damage per hit often make the difference between life and death!

Increase Sneak Skill Quickly
If yoy want to increase your sneak skill fast then you can go to the Imperial City Arena and go to one of the ponds with sacred lotus in them and go in to sneak mode and press "Q" (default) if thats your auto run key. You will now increase your sneak skill because there are gurads near the door. You can even go away from the computer and then come back to see that your sneak skill has increased. Tip if you choose sneak as one of your major skills and do this your level will also be raised quick.

This is not a real tip it's just fun. Jump up in the air near a person and start a conversation with the person and you will stay in the air while the person is talking to you. You will fall down when you exit the conversation.

Duplicating Items in Oblivion
To duplicate any item in your inventory, all you need is a bow and at least 2 of any arrow type. To duplicate an item, simply draw your bow, and keeping your bow drawn enter the inventory menu. Then you must unequip the arrows you have equipped (a message will appear saying you cannot unequip weapons until you are done attacking).
After that, find the item you wish to duplicate and drop it. Now, when you exit the inventory the item you dropped to duplicate will appear, with however many duplicates you wanted (number of arrows equipped) and fall to the ground.
This cheat will only work if the number of items duplicated is lower than the number of arrows equipped. Make sure your bow is fully drawn when entering the inventory.

Oblivion is a Sandbox - Have Fun
I've noticed that in being so open-ended, many gamers will try to play Oblivion in the same way they played Final Fantasy, or Neverwinter Nights, or Diablo, or any variation of the standard RPG. They think of it as playing a game with standardized functions and goals.
Oblivion is meant to be played as if you were there, living the life of the character you've created. After listening to the viewpoints of those that don't like Oblivion but enjoy other RPGs, it all boils down to the idea of open interpretation. By this I mean when you're so used to being told what to do and following a storyline, you look for a story to guide you.
In Oblivion, you make your own story. A great tip to help gameplay would be to realize that when you start the game up, you should let yourself go and make choices in Oblivion like you would make them in real life, and don't be afraid to make mistakes.
Most of the fun I've had in Oblivion is from getting caught, or not being strong enough to win a fight, and just getting creative. It's a giant sandbox, where you can create your world or destroy it as you please.

Easy Enemies Throughout Oblivion
If you want the enemies to be easy through-out the game simply create a new character and make the seven main skills the skills you will use the least or even not at all (like hand-to-hand, marksman, blunt, or what ever skills you personaly don't really use. You will not go up many levels but neither will the enemies you face.

Tired of being Over Encumbered?
Tired of always being over encumbered? Well here are some tips of reducing that hasle. They require a somewhat higher alchemy and entrance to the arcane university. First an easy way to solve the problem is to enchant a weapon or piece with a fortify stregnth or feather spell.
A second way to solve the problem is alchemy. If you have a fairly high alchemy you can make feather potions that reduce wieght by the hundreds for several minutes. You can drink multiple at once so you can hold higher than 1200 lbs for over 500 seconds.

Kill Ten Bears Quickly
In the quest where you have to kill ten wild bears for the farmer, the easiest way for a weak character to accomplish this is to wander until you find a bear, and then run as fast as you can back towards the farmhouse. Once there run into the fenced garden.
The bear will chase you in. Then quickly run out before the bear can kill you and swing the door shut behind you. The bear will be trapped, and you can fire arrows or spells at him to kill him.

Killing Minotaur Lords the Easy Way
Once the player has risen through the ranks of the Arena and become Grand Champion, weekly matches for money against different monsters become available. The toughest monster one ends up fighting is the Minotaur Lord, up to three at a time.
The trick to defeating them is to retreat back into the hall entrance to the Arena pit; the Minotaur Lords are simply too tall to follow after you, and lacking any ranged weapon, cannot reach you.
Assuming you have enough arrows (at least 50 or so) and a bow, or alternatively, a decent arsenal of destructive magic, picking each Minotaur Lord off from a distance is easy. And for your trouble, you get 2000 or more gold. Not a bad deal.

Gold from Count of Skingrad
The count of Skingrad is very forgetfull. Upon compleation of the vampire quest (the one where you try and cure yourself of vamperisem) he will offer you a reward for ending his wifes pain. However he wont remember that he has given you this reward.
Keep asking him about the reward for 2,500 gold each ask, a very fast way to aford those houses you have had your eye on or to increase that alchemy skill or merchantile that grind oh so slowly.

Head Up to Win Battles Easier
The easiest way to win a battle against the enemy AI is to get to high ground (e.g. a rock) where the enemy can't reach you. High Acrobatics will let you jump high enough so the opponent can't follow you. Defeat them with ranged attacks like magic or bows.
If the enemy uses ranged weapons as well, see if you can take cover or at least dodge them without falling off. If you fall off, or the enemy comes up, retry or find a better place to climb upon.

Best Light Armor for Beginners
This must be the best light armor you can get in the beginning. Head to Leyawiin (the city to the south). Just outside the city you can find a tomb called Amelion Tomb. The tomb is located to the north, on the eastern side of the "river". Just follow the right side of the river and you will get to the tomb, it's very close to the city.
Inside you can find a complete set of light armor called Brusefs Amelion Armor. It provides cold resist, and the weapon is a longsword that adds 5 cold damage. Trust me, it's really good to have in the beginning of the game and it looks really nice :). The pieces of armor are scattered in the tomb but they're quite easy to find. I use this armor everytime I start with a character that uses light armor.

Storing Items - General Tips
No house, but need a place to store stuff? Use rooftops to store your stuff. Stable buildings outside of towns work well. There’s usually a way to jump onto the building from hills or rocks. Your items are out of sight and NPCs generally don’t go climbing up on rooftops so your stuff stays where you put it.
Also, don’t go storing your things in random containers because when the game refreshes the items in that container it may delete all your stuff.

Add +5 to Your Favorite Stats
If you enter the console (~ key) and then enter "setdebugtext 10", followed by "TDT", it will output all the information about your skills and how close you are to gaining a skill point. Entering "TDT" again will toggle the display of information on and off.
It will also display how many points for each attribute you've gained. For example, it will show STRENGTH: 10, as in you've gained 10 skill points governed by strength, therefore allowing you a full +5 STRENGTH next time you level up. This, combined with strategically choosing your major skills, will makes it easy to ensure you have +5 atrribute multipliers for chosen stats EACH TIME you level up.

Easily Max Out Sneak and Athletics
You can easily gain many skill ups for these two skills using a simple exploit. Sneak will increase as long as these conditions are met: There is at least one NPC near you, you remain unseen (the eye icon will be dark) and you are mobile. Meeting these requirements is easy enough. You only have to find a wall or corner close to an NPC that isn't in your direct line of sight.
Find one that doesn't all that much, such as a guard or a goblin in a cave. Once you've found a good spot, enter sneak mode, face the wall or corner, and then activate auto-run. Your character will continue to walk into the wall, and providing you remain hidden, you can sit back and watch your sneak skill rise. NOTE: Turn off any light source (torches, light spells, etc) before you start.
And, keep in mind that if your sneak skill is below 50, take off your boots or you will be detected.
Athletics, although not a crucial skill, is even easier to max out. You only have to be walking or running to increase this skill. Simlpy face a wall (preferably a corner), and activate the auto-run function. Once again you will be "walking" into the wall, but your athletics will increase just as though you were adventuring. This is a great way to ensure that the next time you level up, you get a +5 multiplier in your SPEED attributes!

Finish the Main Quest First
Make sure to beat the story line first and then come back to side quests and dungeons because (this might be a bit of a spoiler.) In the end the enemys will be the same level as you. So if your a high level (by doing side quests) all your gaurds will die because they are a low level and it will be nearly impossible to beat the game.

Storing Loot in Bones
One of the most disheartening aspects of Oblivion is parting with valuable loot due to over-encumbrance. You can solve that problem by killing an enemy that falls to pieces, like skeletons or storm atronachs.
Pick up a fragment of your fallen foe's corpse using the 'Z' button. You can store as much loot as you like in the tiny bone or whatever. Just carry the piece with you back to town, where you can sell or store it.

Seek Cover when Under Fire
When you are heavily under fire in an abandoned tower, run up the flights of stairs to the very top level. On the top level, you will usually find that there is a ledge onto which you can jump to put you out of reach of your enemies. From there you can take the time to heal yourself and prepare for a second attack. This also provides a good vantage point to gauge numbers of enemies who oppose you.
Always keep a keen eye on potential safe locations (high rocks with limited access, wall ruins that rise high, even the tops of buildings can sometimes lend themselves to protection).

Increasing Alchemy Skills Easily
Alchemy is one of the easiest skills to train. Just duplicate ingredients with the Dupe glitch (listed previously), and get on to making your potions. Alot of them. And you can sell the potions for alot of money too!
Related quest: On the quest where you have to rescue Hernantier from his Dreamworld, when facing the two Minotaurs in the Test of Resolve, save before you actually enter it. The Ayleid Cask is a random weapon spawner. The Greater Staff of Lightning will always be there, but the other two weapons are random.
Reload until you get the weapon with a 80 points, 9 uses of Disintegrate Weapon Enchantment. You can then destroy the hammers the Minotaurs use, and that will take a lot off the range of the attacks. Very useful when playing on higher difficulties.

Free Money - Lots of it!
This cheat will net you at least 6,000 gold every week.
After you become Grand Champion of the Arena, you have the option of fighting 1, 2, or 3 Minotaur Lords. Normally these guys are pretty hard to beat. But go ahead and choose 3. But instead of running forward when the gate lowers, just back up.
The Minotaurs can't fit their big heads through your hallway. Just stand back and zap them with spells, or run forward to attack then run backwards out of their reach. If you start getting beat up, just back up and wait for your magicka to refill, then heal yourself or start zapping them again.
You will receive 3200 gold for the victory, AND have the ability to pick up the 3 weapons they leave behind (usually ebony waraxes, hammers, etc.)

Increasing Speechcraft Skill Semi-quickly
Quick and easily raise your speechcraft (Xbox 360 version). Talk to someone and persuade them. Start the cirlce minigame and just keep rotating the circle and keep pushing the A button. You will gain speechcraft semi-quick doing so and there is no limit how long you can do this. Also it does not matter what the n.p.c's disposition is. You can just keep doing this and raise your speechcraft all the way up to expert level semi-quickly.

Enemies Don't Like Borders
One of the much-vaunted new features of Oblivion NPCs is that, unlike Morrowind, they can cross zone borders. So attacking someone and running to a different area just doesn't work anymore, right? Wrong.
One thing I figured out is that while agressive NPCs can cross zone borders, they rarely do so in masses, and sometimes they don't cross at all. I figured this out during the raid on Kvatch - when I entered an area with 6 or so hostile Daedra within striking range of me. I returned through the door directly behind me, and was suprised when only one of them followed me through the zone crossing.
After many tests with this method I could never get more then 2, and usually only one, to follow me. If you're fighting a horde of enemies, this method can make dealing with them MUCH simpler.

Free Unique Horse
To get a free horse or rather, a unicorn, go south of the Imperial City across the moat, you'll see on your compass a camp. Go to it then go south some till you see a shrine to Hircine, then go south more to an open field, kill the three Minotaur and there it is, a unicorn. Fast and strong, dont attack it or it wont let you ride it again. Counts as your mount, even sits outside of cities!

How to Pick a Lock the Best Way!
This is a FAQ of many friends of mine, and a Hint to those that need to know the best way to pick a lock in the world of Oblivion!
Now, picking a lock successfully on your own without using the auto-pick button does not depend on your security skill! It depends on what you know and how fast your fingers are.
To successfully snap a tumbler into place, keep pushing the tumbler up with the lockpick until the tumbler moves upward then down slowly, then back down.
After you see that, the next time you push up will be a sure-fire snap into place, if of course your fingers are are fast enough. Just push it that one last time and click the left mouse button as soon as possible and it will snap into place. This allows you to avoid relying on the sound patterns all the time, which also comes in handy.
One last tip, DO NOT BECOME IMPATIENT! If you are impatient you will break MANY lockpicks on just a 2 or 3 tumbler lock. However, expect to break about 1-3 lockpicks on locks that qualify as average or higher, normally the chests you lockpick have 1 or 2 lockpicks in them anyway, so you are good to go. I hope this helps all you thieves!

Let the NPCs Protect You early on
After you finish the Kvatch mission, clearing the city near the beginning of the game Brother Martin follows you. Take him to the city to meet the other preist / monk / blade member. When you arrive you have to fight some Mythic Dawn. After the attack, Brother Martin and anothor Preist follows you to hide brother Martin in the Blade HQ.
These characters cannot die. Let them follow you around, visit every cave and let them kill the enemies. They will kill anything before you can even swing your sword. This way you can get all the goodies in the beginning of the game.

Try to Include Athletics as Major Skill
When selecting major skills, no matter your specialization, always try to include the athletics skill because you will most certainly want to run for a majority of your foot journeys. While mastering this skill doesn't have the greatest benifit to all classes, it provides a skill that can easily be leveled up - so your character will level up faster too.

University Tricks
If you can enter the Arcane University (if you have all recommendations of all guild halls of the mages guild), buy a Frenzy Spell (anywhere) so that you can upgrade it to a better one while in the university.
Then while in the university, target a Mage Apprentice only to see him attack others and not you. He will certainly die, but don't worry, he will respawn in a matter of days. He will have a nice Dagger attached to him (or it is thrown out of his hands so that you may need to search for it).
However, you will gain no bounty and if you do it by daytime when the apprentices meet together the guards will interfere if you just put the doors open. They won't attack you, and you have a chance to get a very good weapon of disintegrate if the guards get a chance at fighting a scholar. Sell these items and receive a lot of gold for it or use them as weapons.

Oblivion Easter Eggs
Use the Gray Fox' Cowl of Nocturnal without being Arrested
(This only applies to those that have completed the Thieves guild quest line)
Once you have completed the Thieves guild quest line you will receive the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal which gives you really sweet powers.
These powers include: life detection for 120 feet, feathering your inventory by 200 or allowing you to carry 200 more units of items, add 25 points to your sneak score, give you another identity to which you can complete quests for, allowing you to use another identity to murder people in plain daylight or commit any crime and then take it off and only the Gray Fox will have the bounty not you, and lead the Thieves guild.
Sounds pretty good right - but the one bad thing about this cowl is that it automatically gives you a 500 gold bounty making the guards chase after you wherever you go in a town.
To gain the powers of the Gray Fox and use his Cowl of Nocturnal in the cities without being arrested by the guards - and to gain the power of invisibility to hide yourself from monsters and attacks without losing the full effect:
There are several steps to do this, listed below.
- Join the Mages Guild in any major city.
- Go to each Mages' guild hall in each of the major cities and complete the tasks you have assigned to you.
- Once you have completed recommendations for the cities of Bruma, Cheydinhal, Skingrad, Anvil, Leyawin, and Bravil you will gain access to the Arcane University in the Imperial City.
- Proceed to the Arcane University in the Imperial City.
- Within the Arcane University find the building called the Praxographical Center.
- Head to one of the Spell making stands (you must know a life detection spell) choose the effect of light and choose the lowest magical use and money cost available for making the spell and create it.
- Equip the low magicka use spell and change the input setting on your television so you can watch TV while doing this. ( if you're using a computer you are going to get really bored.)
- Keep clicking down on the right bumper or spell casting key multiple times for about half an hour.
- Change the input setting back to your game and observe your illusion level go up. When your illusion skill level is at least 50 you can proceed with the next step.
- You will know be able to cast Journeyman level spells and use Journeyman level affects like Chameleon.
- Buy a spell from one of the Mages' guild halls that has an affect of chameleon and with your raised illusion level you will be able to cast it.
- Acquire 5 grand soul gems with a grand soul level from the Mystic Emporium in the Market District of the Imperial City.
- Go to any armor shops in the many cities and gain 5 pieces of armor that are light armor which will include a ring, fur gauntlets, a fur cuirass, fur boots, and light armor greaves. (no helmets or heavy armor)
- Go to the Arcane University and proceed to the Chrinousium building.
- Head to an altar of enchanting and use each grand soul gem and one of the pieces of armor you acquired. Choose the effect of chameleon, if you don’t have this effect either check your illusion level and make sure its 50 or make sure you have bought a spell with chameleon as an effect.
- Enchant each item with a chameleon effect which should give each item an effect of 20% chameleon.
- Repeat for all items until all 5 items have enchanted.
- Put on all pieces of armor and congratulations! You are now totally invisible and able to bypass people, guards, and monsters.
- If you have the Grey Cowl of Nocturnal put it on and wear it proudly as no guards will chase you and if you attack people while invisible they will not attack back or they will simply run away.

Spell-casting Trick for Super High Jumps
Here is a spellcasting trick to make super high jumps and such. You can see the world map from a bird's eye view, and that's just plain fun.
Spell #1
Weakness to Fire %3 for 1 sec on self
Weakness to Magika %100 for 1 sec on self
Fortify Acrobatics 25 pts for 20 sec on self
Fortify Magika 25 pts for 20 sec on self
Spell #2:
Weakness to Fire %3 for 1 sec on self
Weakness to Magika %100 for 1 sec on self
Fortify Acrobatics 50 pts for 10 sec on self
Fortify Magika 50 pts for 10 sec on self
Cast these 2 spells on and off, you may need a few potions to get through the first part to restore Magika After awhile, however, your Magika will be very very high.
Cast about 30 or so times, your Acrobatics skill will be around 150k+, Jump.. have fun..
NOTE: You can do this with ANY skill, and still have different effects, however, when tested with speed, you end up running over city walls and the game never renders the outside graphics, it's fun to run around, but eventually freezes the game.
Save first — The fall may easilly kill you, unless you cast the spells on the way down as well.

Lets say you finish the main quest in Oblivion. Everyone you meet is going to be 100% disposition or close to it. Yet you want to level up to that ultra uber L40+ (I finished the game at L39).
To increase speachcraft when your fame is so high everyone likes you, simply find a merchant with expert mercantile skill (chorrol weapons dealer) set your haggle to 100% and she will refuse nearly every time. (or try to sell a stack of items for more than the merchant can afford anywhere else).
This drives down their dispotion, giving you a chance to butter them up all over again. Can be done repeatedly so long as their dispotion is lower than your skill/personality max and you havn't tried speachcraft on them too many 'times' during that 'day'.

Arrested? No Problem!
When you are about to get arrested, go to your inventory and drop all stolen goods. Then you get to go back afterwards and get them.

Boots of Springheel Jak Trick
First you must have completed the Thieves Guild quests without destroying the Boots of Springheel Jak. In order to do that you must simply survive a small fall near the end of the last quest with the boots unequipped.
After that go to the Shrine of Sanguine and get the quest there. Follow what the quest tells you to do and when you cast the spell, guards will try and arrest you. Get arrested. (Don't worry, all your equipment is in a chest at the Shrine of Sanguine, so you shouldn't lose anything.)
After you serve your time, you should have the Boots of Springheel Jak in your inventory. If you try to equip them, it will say "You can not equip this enchanted item at this time." But if you check your Active Effects page under Fortify Acrobatics, it should say that you still have the boost from the boots. You can also feel free to equip any other boots as well.

Need Arrows?
When you are in the Arena Bloodworks usually the Blue Team Gladiator is shooting arrows at the training target. So if you stand by the side of the training target you can collect all of his arrows (iron). After half an hour standing there I got 20k arrows! It is well good if you are an archer.

Mr. Invisible 360
First, accumulate as many "chameleon" Sigil Stones or Enchanted items as possible. Some very good ones are the Chrystaline Cuirass and the Grand Ring of Chameleon. Their total percent effect can be found on the constant effects tab under Magic. Wear the necessary amount to bring your total up to or above 100.
Now you can complete any quest without being seen, take any action without sneaking, and never get a bounty (except for assaulting guards). You can walk right up to Daedra and beat them to death as slowly as you like. This cheat is exceptional for boosting your stats in any skill fairly quickly. Also good for taking on high level bosses or thieving.
For this cheat to be affective, do not complete the main quest. Tested on Xbox 360.

Fortify Security for Lock-picking
When you finish the Mage Guild Initiation and can visit the University make a spell that fortifies your security skill. Even if it increases the skill by 100 points it will still cost under 50 mana (not sure about exact number). The spell has to only last for 1 second as the game pauses when you are in the lock pick menu.
So you end up casting a 50 mana spell to have a security of 100... and none of the tumblers fall when you break a pick.

Get in Close and Use a Fast Blade
As an Assasin there are some obvious tactics, use poision, get good at Alchemy, and find those shadows.
My tip is to use the fastest blade you can find when getting in close. The damage of 2 fast critical hits far outweighs the damage increase a bigger weapon gives.
For example a Dagger with 8 damage and a Longsword with 12 damage.
Dagger at 6x twice = 32 damage
Longsword 6x once = 24 damage
Not to mention if you actually poison both hits.

Invisibility Method - Chameleon 100%
This cheat was discovered with a PC, as PC is the platform for which Oblivion was designed.
First step is to acquire a significant amount of cash (about 10000 gold, I believe).
I recommend selling high-quality equipment such as Daedric items for this purpose.
Next, visit Red Diamond Jewelery in the Market District of the Imperial City. Buy the Spectre Ring (note: at times, for some reason, the ring may be unavailable. I believe that in my case an NPC stole it from the shop.
Now go to the Arcane University (you need to have completed the Recommendation quests.) Bring along two Soul Gems containing Grand-level souls (ie from a Lich, Xivilai, or other high-level creature.) Enchant an Amulet or Necklace with 20% Chameleon. Enchant another item with Chameleon, but not a Ring or Amulet. You will need the space for the Amulet you have made and for another Ring you will need. I recommend using Shoes or Headgear for the second item.
If you equip your items (the Spectre Ring and the two Chameleon items), you should have a nice 65% constant effect Chameleon. But I'm not stopping there.
Once you have reached level 17 or higher, go to Meridia's Shrine (west of Skingrad). Bring some Bonemeal OR Ectoplasm. Do the quest. You will recieve the Ring of Khajiiti. Equip it. Your Chameleon is now 100%, which will function as Invisibility that never goes away until you unequip the items.
This should prevent most enemies from EVER hitting you.

Oblivion Character Creation
One of the most important parts of the game is overlooked by many players. The selection of your character - its race, class and sign - will affect you for the rest of the game and is probably the most important decision you will make. Don't be lured into making hasty and unthoughtful decisions by your urge to get playing quickly.
Before you pick your character do some research and decide what you want to do in the game.
If you are not sure browse the many forums and fan sites for information on the differant playing styles. Once you have your playing style selected you can then decide how you want to make your character. Online character creation tools found on the web are great to determine whether your ideas will work well. In general it is not good practice to pick a premade class. They often have overlapping skills such as blade and blunt that waste a major skill spot.
Also some skills can easily become useless either later game or with certain items. Security for example is useless if you get the Skeleton Key, which can be acquired early at level 2. Simlarly some races have redundant skill bonuses. For example some races such as Redguard have bonuses to both blade and blunt, which is, in the case of Reguards, a waste of +10 skill bonus. Similarly some signs are either weaker and less useful than others. The tower for example allows the player to open one average lock a day and reflect 5% damage for 2 minutes.
While it could have uses it is far less useful than other either magicka or stat boosting signs. However stat boosting signs can become less useful late in the game — if played right an attribute can be raised by +5 per level. To do this you need to level up the abilities that are governed by the attribute 10 times. For every 2 levels of skills under the attribute you gain +1 to the bonus when leveling up. This also factors into strategy for picking skills, as a player might want to leave at least one skill in each attribute minor to allow for this leveling up. (Once you increase the major skills 10 times you can no longer continue to add to attribute bonuses.)
While Oblivion is a great game and the urge to play it can be overwhelming not thinking through a character can lead to much frustation later in the game as you discover that some choices were not good. You will be that character for a long time, put the time in early to make sure the time later is enjoyable.

The Blackrock Caverns
In short, the dungeon does a good job appearing to be fancy-pants and then being very, how do you say, sub-par in it's core.
This dungeon perfects the double-bluff, needless to say.
Hidden behind a waterfall in a calm little pond in the western parts of Cyrodiil, near Chorrol. The entrance area is a kodak moment in and of itself. Inside, you'll find a a handful of bandits and a nasty trap waiting to fill your face with a log as big as you (Bigger if your a Bosmer, heh.)
After you kill the bandits in the second level, you'll likely wonder if your missing something. You are.
Look for a switch in the southern area of the second level (it's a turnable switch.) Activate it and it'll glow, make a weird chime, and vanish. One entrance has been blocked by a bolder, the other door leading back to the first level has a surprise in wait on the other side. Undead Pirates! Yay!
Kill the Blackrock Pirates and take there stuff. Then look around for another magic switch where they had appeared. Activate it, and head back to the second level.
No Pirates, but look almost directly ahead of you and you'll find a trap door leading to the dungeon's main event.
Follow the tunnel until you get to the rock door. Activate the switch on the right, and you'll find yourself facing the earthly remains of a Pirate Ship, plus more Pirates. Kill them, and the place is yours to plunder. You'll find Septims, Weapons, and some potions.
