Original video review credit: TmarTn
What’s going on guys? TmarTn here and Call of Duty Ghosts has been out for a little bit over a week now. I wanted to sit down and do a video talking about my experience thus far. What I’m thinking, some of my opinions, some of the things I like and don’t like. I want to get some of your guy’s feedback as well to kind of get an idea of how we all like this game. So let’s get straight into it.
One thing that I really do like about Call of Duty Ghosts is the create a soldier system. I love how they kind of taken the idea of Black Ops 2’s point allocation system to allow you to use these points to pick primary weapons and perks and things like that. It makes the class customization so much deeper, like there are 35 perks you can choose from which is absolutely nuts. It’s the most we’ve ever had in Call of Duty. And they all play an important role which I think is pretty cool.
There are so many different ways you can play the game. That when I get bored of playing it one way, I can play it in an entirely different way and still be successful. So I love that. I also like the character customization, like as stupid as it is. You literally never see your character, like you never see what you look like in the game. But I love going after the Gilly suit, or that red and black you know solider outfit camo. Or that new helmet that looks cool. Things like that, it feels like it gives me something to strive for rather than just ranking up and going after those prestige emblems which is pretty cool.
Levelling Up (Rank)
Now, one thing that I don’t necessarily like so much about the multiplayer and this whole kind of create a class leveling up type thing. Is how slow you rank up. You rank up so much slower in this Call of Duty game than you had in previous games and it’s like seriously really noticeable.
Like the race, we beat it in like six days last year and that’s in real life time. I think it was only five days and three hours of in game time. And it’s going to take us probably more like ten days this year. So it’s nearly doubled, like it takes so long to rank up. And while it is kind of cool in the fact that you aren’t going to get to the max level as soon as you normally would. So maybe it keeps it fresh for you and you still feel like you’re making progress because you’re ranking up. I also would like to see it rank up a little bit faster. I’m interested to see what you guys think about that.
Weapon Damage (Health System)
Now next up in terms of weapon damage, this is a lot different in this Call of Duty game. So in Modern Warfare three, you died pretty quickly. When Black Ops 2 came out, it seemed like either you had a little bit more health or the guns did a little bit less damage. Because you didn’t die as nearly as fast. And now this game comes out and you die more quickly in this game than you did in Modern Warfare three.
People literally just melt you and you die in like two or three bullets from every weapon from pretty much any range. It’s pretty much a very, very fast dying game. And at first I wasn’t a fan of this. First I was one of those people like everybody else, its like, “This is crap, I die when people look at me. This is such BS.”
There’s no way I can win gun fights if I’m not the one aiming down sight first and things like that. And at first, I wasn’t a fan of it, but recently after a couple days of playing, I actually kind of like it. The game is very fast now and if you play correctly and you don’t play like an idiot like you could in Black Ops 2, you can still be very successful. Because you may die quickly, but guess what? So do your enemies.
So that’s why I don’t really understand why a lot of people are complaining about the health system. Yes it is different, but it’s almost different in a good way. Do you want the exact same Call of Duty every single year? Of course not, that would get boring and I feel like the same thing happened in the transition from Modern Warfare three to Black Ops two. I feel like the same people that are complaining now were complaining back then. “Oh this is horses**t, it takes too long to kill people in Black Ops two, I miss Modern Warfare.” It’s the nature of the Call of Duty to complain.
So if you’re one of those people who don’t really like it. I ask you to kind of think to yourself, would you want the same Call of Duty over and over? Of course not, so I think it’s pretty cool, I like how you die very quickly. And I think it really kind of speeds the gameplay up in some ways but also slows it down. It’s a different feeling game which I think is good. Because I want progression, I want difference, I don’t want the same thing over and over.
Now another thing that kind of has to do with guns and weapons and things like that and something I feel a lot of people are leaving unnoticed. Is Infinity Ward has done an amazing job with weapon balance in this game. If you think about it, I think this game has the best weapon balance out of any Call of Duty to date. All the previous Call of Duties, there’s always that one weapon or those couple of weapons that truly stand out. And you can see that it is definitely a majority of the community uses it, you see it in almost every game.
But in this game, I don’t feel like that’s the case. Now I’m not saying that there aren’t standout weapons. Like yes, the MSPS is fricken laser rifle. The AK 12 silenced with a grip is deadly from pretty much any range, you can’t really compete with it. The SE 2010 almost has no recoil.
There are the better weapons of the classes in this game, but I don’t think that there are as head and shoulders above the other weapons like they have been before. I see all kinds of weapons out there on the game; I see all kinds of assault rifles, SMGs, LMGs, shotguns, snipers. Literally, I like using LMGs in this game. Because they’re good for what they do. And I’ve never like LMGs in a Call of Duty before.
I feel that there is a wide variety of weapons that are very usable in this game. Yes some are better than others. But it’s not better than others to the fact that a noob could be using that weapon and still out play, it’s not going to happen. I feel like most of the weapons are pretty close to each other and I think they did a very good job with that.
Now next up, let’s talk about connection. So for the most part, my connection has been pretty much exceptional, it’s been really, really good. Especially the first launch couple of days, there were almost no problems with Call of Duty which is pretty insane. With those millions and millions of people trying to get online. I don’t even think the deadies are fully rolled out yet, I think they’re coming out later this month or something like that. Nobody really knows the details on that. But yeah, the dedicated servers aren’t even fully out yet and the connections are still pretty good.
Now I will say that I do notice sometimes there are those moments when you are around the corner and it feel likes the bullets kind of follow you around that corner. You’re around it by a couple of feet but you still die anyway and I don’t know if that’s really ever fully avoidable. Like I don’t know how they would ever do that. I think that’s just the nature of online gaming.
It’s one of the most frustrating moments in the world. If you’ve watched the race live stream, I’ve raged at those moments cause I hate it. When I outplay and I get around the corner and it’s like I got a rubber band attached to me and then I’m pulled back around so that they can kill me. But I don’t think that’s avoidable. I think that’s always going to be there because it’s the internet. It takes time to send information between the systems. But apart from that occasionally, I think overall the connection has been pretty good for me. And I’ve been on Wi-Fi, I haven’t been wired up or anything like that so that’s good news.
Now next up let’s talk about maps. So I think there are a good variety of maps. But honestly I think they’re too big. Obviously this is my opinion, some people love the bigger maps but in my opinion, I like the closer, you know, CQB maps. I’ve always been more of a SMG player than anything and I find myself having to use ARs in this game because of the distance of the engagements, I don’t even like using SMGs this much. Because AR’s are kind of better in most situations.
There just much more versatile in this game. I think a lot of the maps are a little bit too big. Not necessarily too big, but I feel like there are too many big maps and not enough small maps. I need more strike zone type maps. Strike zone is the smallest map in the game by far and there’s nothing else that’s kind of like it. So I feel like if they had more of a balance of big maps and small maps rather than just big maps, it would be better. But again that’s just my opinion; let me know what you guys think about that.
Speaking about the maps, one thing I do like are all the dynamic features. I think a lot of them are cool, shooting down the tree on prison break to make a bridge, I think that’s awesome. The logs don’t really help out that much. But there’s a bunch of different maps that have some cool stuff on them that are kind of interact-able. Actually I haven’t even played on freefall yet, I downloaded the code but I haven’t gotten into a match on freefall which I don’t understand how that’s possible.
Is there a certain playlist you have to be in? I’m not sure but yeah I think overall the maps are good. I think there’s a great amount of variety; I think they’ve done a good job with them. Most of them flow pretty well but just some of them I think are a little bit too big. One exception, I hate flooded, I’m just going to put that out there. I think flooded is an awful map, maybe I’m bad at it, maybe I don’t understand it. But I can’t get a good flow on that map; let me know what you guys think.
Next up, talking about killstreaks. Killstreaks I think are pretty good in this game. And again this is kind of like a personal preference. I feel like killstreaks are much weaker than they have in the past, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Maybe killstreaks aren’t meant to be these destructive forces that completely change the face of the game.
Like in Modern Warfare two, if you got an 11 killstreak and got that chopper gunner, you were going to get yourself an additional 15 kills by the time you got out of it. Like that thing was crazy and we’re used to having pretty powerful killstreaks in COD. The killstreaks in this game, I feel like especially in the assault package, they’ve been dumb down a bit. And again I don’t think that’s a bad thing.
I don’t think you should be getting ten plus kills with your killstreaks. It’s fun to do, don’t get me wrong but I also think it’s a little bit unfair. I think they’ve done a good job, I think the Loki could be a little bit more powerful. I get a 15 killstreak and I get an additional 3 kills, that really pi**es me off. I think I would rather get a guard dog than a Loki, I honestly think he’s more useful.
But the other ones, I think the chopper gun is very good, I think the griffin is very good. I think the vulture is pretty good. I think the trinity rocket is pretty good. I think there are some good killstreaks out there; they’re just a little bit weaker then they have been in the past.
I think support, they’ve done a really, really good within the fact that there are a lot of support kill streaks, you know, things that don’t kill, things that help your teammates out. But there are also some killing support killstreaks in there. Like the Helo Scout or the Helo Sniper, the one with the sniper up in the helicopter. I think that one’s good. Because it’s not powerful but if you’re good with it, you’ll get a couple of kills. I kind of think that’s cool, people that want to go for support killstreaks, they can still have something that is going to reward them a little bit and not just their team.
Now finally for the specialist scorestreaks, I think they’ve done a great job with specialists. I really like what they’ve done. I like how the first three perks that you pick for your specialists determine how many kills it takes to get the rest. So if you pick bad perks that aren’t going to help you as much. You can get the rest of the perks earlier or if you pick really good perks which are really going to help you, then you have to get a lot more kills to get the rest of your perks. I think that’s cool and it adds some strategy to the game.
Now moving on, for the game modes in this game. I really love what they’ve done with the game modes. Crank, if you play too much crank in a row, it starts to wear you down and I really start to hate it. But I think crank is a fun mode, I think it’s really fun to have that super fast character and constant action. I like crank, I like search and rescue, I like blitz, I like everything they’ve added in.
One thing I don’t agree with and I’m not fond of is the fact that they removed CTF, demo, S and D and headquarters. If you don’t know they’re putting back S and D back in here in two days. But still, I miss CTF, I miss demolition, I miss headquarters. I don’t understand why they had to take those out. I know they don’t want to split people up too much and have too many playlist, because not enough people would be playing in each playlist.
But still those are kind of OG Call of Duty game modes. And it seems weird to me that they would just be taken out. And I hope in future years they don’t stay out. I hope they come back because I don’t want to see those things go. They were a lot of fun. I would love to see them add hard point in. But I don’t think that’s going to happen because that’s a Treyarch game mode. And I don’t think they would share something like that, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Next up, game features, let’s talk about these game features. So the lean, I think it’s a cool idea but I don’t think it’s that useful. I feel like when you lean out from around a corner, you’re still very exposed in this game. And I don’t find it useful, I feel like if you strafe in and out of a corner, you’re going to have a better time and have more of an effect on the enemy than just leaning. I feel like you lean too much and it’s just kind of meh.
I think the slide is really cool and I actually really like the slide. I find it very useful, I find it very effective. I think it’s tough for enemies to hit you when you’re sliding and obviously that’s good for capturing objectives or moving from cover to cover and things like that. And I think it’s a lot of fun to slide around so that’s good.
I think the new squad’s mode that they’ve added in terms of games features is really awesome. I know a lot of you guys probably haven’t touched squads, but I really would recommend it. Safeguards are a lot of fun, squad assault is a lot of fun. It’s a lot less competitive than multiplayer but you’re still ranking up and you’re still having fun with friends, so that’s pretty cool.
And also extinction is a lot of fun. It’s not Zombies; obviously it’s not going to be Zombies. And I would like to see them add a mode into it where it has unlimited rounds to where there is no ending, you can see how long you last. But as a game mode, I think it’s awesome, I think the aliens look great, I think it’s a really cool game mode and I cannot wait to see where they take it with the future maps and things like that, because I’ve had a lot of fun on it. So I think extinction is a very, very welcome addition to the game.
Now finally the last thing I want to mention in this multiplayer review is the community response we’ve gotten. So if you guys don’t know, last year in Black Ops two, Treyarch really kind of set the trend to listen to the community. And they constantly worked with us and constantly listened to our feedback and constantly kept us up to date with everything that was going on.
They were just a dream. It was the first time that a studio had been that attentive to what the community said. Or at least this smaller vocal part of our community that’s online, on twitter and YouTube and things like that. And nobody was really sure how Infinity Ward was going to react this year. If they were going to do the same thing or if they were going to be a little bit more reserved or a little bit more taken aback.
Nobody knew what they were going to do. But so far they’ve done an amazing job. The game didn’t ship with S and D, it was only in private match, it wasn’t a public match game mode. And guess what? After a couple days of us complaining, they made a public announcement that they were going to add S and D back into public matches on the 15th of November. That’s awesome.
Also the competitive community. They kind of voiced some of their concerns that they didn’t have the certain LAN settings and stuff they needed for the private matches to host tournaments and things like that. And guess what? They got back to them almost immediately and they’re taking feedback from people right now and they’re going to add in more patches to add stuff for competitive play.
I feel like they’re going to be very, very attentive to this game. I feel like they’re going to listen to use. They’re going to add new things in all the time. Of course, we’re going to have DLC four times this year. But maybe they’ll add in random things throughout the year. Like they did with the community playlist last year with all or nothing or money in the dank and stuff like that.
The little things like that really extend the life of the game and it makes it a lot more fun. Especially when we get into like next year in the spring and the summer and things like that. If they’re constantly updating it, it’s going to extend the lifetime; it’s going to make more fun for us. And it’s going to make it a better game.
So that’s my kind of thoughts about Ghosts so far. Again, if you agree or disagree or have any other opinions. Please feel free to leave them down in the comments, I really want to get some of you guy’s feedback. Overall I think this is a great game, I think we’ve made a lot of progress with this thing. I think there are some differences like the health or the damage and things like that.
But I think it’s differences that make this a different Call of Duty. And overall I’m really, really enjoying it. By far, it’s not perfect at all, but it’s a very good Call of Duty game. I think one of the better ones we had in a while.
So let me know what you guys think, thank you guys so much for watching. I’ll catch you all later.
