Over at The Times Online there is an article entitled “Sony forecast to blast rivals away with the launch of PlayStation 3” which is suggesting that Sony are planning for big success with the Playstation 3 in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe this year.
With the official launch of the Playstation 3 just days away now, analyst Nick Parker estimates that Sony will “sell around 4 million units in Europe this year, with 1 to 1.5 million in the UK." If true this would push the console ahead of the extremely popular Wii by the end of the year.
Sony have “made 220,000 of the £425 consoles available for the UK launch on Friday, a figure so large that retailers are reporting none of the supply problems that have plagued rival launches.” Nick firmly believes that “The lack of shortage is supply driven; what Sony has shipped will sell.”
Whilst there is no doubt that Sony have really gone all out to get a decent supply of machines to Europe in an attempt to avoid the shortage issues that were present at the US launch, we're not quite convinced that it will be enough to usurp the Wii which is still in huge demand even now. Or indeed the Xbox 360 with its massive head start over both competitors.
